New NF Q03-018 standard on packaging recyclability

A new French standard for assessing the recyclability of cellulosic packaging

The NF Q03-018 standard, “Paper and Board – Recyclability of materials, products, and articles made from paper, board, and cellulose fibres –méthode CTP-REC25 / CEREC ” has just been published. Of French origin, it is based on a method developed by the CTP and CEREC, constituting a real asset for both the paper industry and French standardization. This standard establishes a solid normative framework for quantifying the parameters essential for assessing the technical recyclability of cellulosic packaging in conventional recycling channels.

A test method representative of industrial processes
The standard describes a laboratory test method for determining the main process and quality parameters necessary for assessing the recyclability of materials and articles made from paper, board, and cellulose fibres, including moulded fibre products. The method is based on faithfully reproducing the key stages of paper mills using conventional recycling processes, including:

• pulping step,
• coarse and fine screening steps (stock preparation),
• heavyweight cleaning step (approach flow of the papermachine).
• The stages of collection, sorting, and overall assessment of recyclability are not covered by the scope of the standard.

A reliable and robust approach
The test protocol greatly limits the human factor, which is often a source of variability between technicians and/ or laboratories, and guarantees excellent reproducibility of results. The main strengths of the standard are:

• complete representativeness of a recycling mill with conventional process, from the stock preparation to the approach flow;
• processing of the entire sample, from the pulper to the cleaning step, avoiding any unrepresentative intermediate sampling, particularly in the presence of fragmented elements (plastics, adhesives…).
