General informations

Mechanical strength properties such as the tensile breaking strength, bursting strength, tearing strength, can be measured using the equipment at the Physical Testing Laboratory.

The main product groups tested are:

  • raw materials such as paper, tissue paper, folding boxboard, corrugated board, composites, etc.
  • finished products such as boxes, folding boxboard, bricks, books, brochures, tissue products, blister packaging, labels, etc.

These tests can be implemented after standardised conditioning, or after heat-, moisture- or light-ageing.

The following tests can be performed at the Physical Properties Testing Laboratory.

On paper and folding boxboard

  • Determination of tensile properties, according to NF EN ISO 1924-2
  • Determination of tensile strength after immersion in water, using the Finch apparatus, according to NF Q 03-056 or ISO 3781
  • Paper - Determination of bursting strength, according to NF EN ISO 2758
  • Paper and board - Determination of bursting strength after immersion in water, according to ISO 3689
  • Board – Determination of bursting strength, according to NF EN ISO 2759
  • Determination of tearing resistance (Elmendorf method), according to NF EN 21974
  • Determination of tearing resistance after immersion in water
  • Determination of zero-span tensile strength, wet or dry, according to ISO 15361
  • Determination of bending stiffness – resonance method, Kodak instrument, according to ISO 5629
  • Determination of bending resistance, according to ISO 2493-1 or ISO 2493-2.
  • Bending resistance, according to the Tappi method T 543
  • Determination of folding endurance, according to NF ISO 5626, on a Lhomargy device

On corrugated boards

  • Board – Determination of bursting strength, according to NF EN ISO 2759

On tissue paper and tissue products

  • Determination of tensile strength, stretch at maximum force and tensile energy absorption, for tissue paper NF EN ISO 12625-4
