Sustainability: Water, Air, Energy

UST’s Manager: Frédéric GUILLET

Objectives

Allow companies to ensure their sustainability.

Competences

Management of papermaking process water circuits: characterisation of waters, assessments of hydraulic and mass flows, and use of simulation tools.
Treatment of effluents: treatment techniques, assessment and improvement in cleaning performances, analysis of malfunctions.
Clogging: deposit phenomena and treatment methods.
Odours: odour measurements, reduction of olfactory nuisances.
Energy and greenhouse effect: measurements of electricity consumption, improvement in energy performances, impact of heat rejects and energy recovery, methodology of assessment of green house gas emissions.
Management of by-products: characterisation of by-products from different origins (wastewater treatment plants, installations of recovered paper recycling) and waste disposal circuits upgrading.
Biodegradability: knowledge of the normative framework developed by the « Packaging » guideline, control of conformity tests with upgrading criteria.

Activity

To improve environmental performances of paper mills, actions of research, Consultancy Expertise are led for management of water, air, energy and waste.
To improve the management of process waters, define the Best Available Technologies for effluents treatments and optimise their functioning, tailor-made services are proposed. A club composed of papermakers, whose theme is wastewater treatments plants, provide them the relevant information on the subject and allow them to pool their experience.
The impact of the process water temperature of pulp, paper and board mills on the environment is studied in order to optimise the functioning conditions and to assess the possibilities of energy recovery.
To reduce olfactory pollution, strategies of reduction at source are elaborated, in particular at occurrence of problems due to reduction of water consumption.
Work has started on biofilm phenomena in circuits and on machines in order to develop adapted strategies for clogging control.
Tests of packaging biodegradation are carried out to assess their compliance with the Packaging Guideline and specific tools are available to optimise sludge dewatering.
Using the research results of studies led by the whole UST teams, the best practices for energy production and energy control in papermaking processes are regularly enriched and energy diagnoses and assessments of greenhouse gas emissions improve the performances of industrial sites.
