Printing Technologies and Printability

UST’ Manager: Paul PIETTE

Objectives

Improve quality and productivity of prints; Development of new functionalities through printing processes.

Competences

Offset (Cold Set, Quick Set, Heat Set), Rotogravure (Publishing, packaging), Flexo (packaging), Digital (industry, offices), Printed electronics (Flexo, Ink Jet).
Consultancy and expertise: industrial printing trials, expertises of objects of contention, training courses.

Activity

The main lines of research meet the permanent requirements of papermakers for developing new printability predictive tests in order to reduce complaints and returns from customers and improve the overall productivity of paper mills.
The numerous printing tests (over 800 for 25 years) have allowed to acquire the knowledge of the printers’ and prints market.
The digital and conventional printing processes are assessed in terms of runnability. For each printing process, all quality criteria are taken into account for implementing the specific test forms. The printing methodologies developed (choice of machine, paper printing sequences, control of inks at print runs, sampling o prints …) enable to measure the performances of papers and boards. During developments of new products (papers, boards, inks, rubber, pigments …) that expertise is a tool which allows to validate their appropriateness with the market demand.

Materials

  • Printability lab (IGT, densitometer, glossmeter, Winstone, Ericksen, balance, incubator, etc…).
  • Colour analysis lab (Spectrocolorimeter, image analysis, microscope, binocular, office ink jet machines).
  • Knowledge of phenomena ruling the printing defects allows to develop relevant printability devices (i-jetset for ink jet, i-motto for offset mottling, FLAT for rotary offset fluting).
  • The access to industrial presses located in Nord-Pas-de-Calais (North of France) and Paris, is possible by renting.

Partnerships

Most of research projects have been led in partnerships for years with ink makers, printers, press builders, suppliers of pigments and binders and paper and board makers.
