Performance, Quality, Standardisation of Papers & Boards

UST’s Manager: Sylvie MOREAU TABICHE

Objectives

Analyse the quality of papers– boards and improve their performances.

Competences

Paper physics, paper-board testing methods, printability, converting, standardisation.
Consultancy and expertise on papers and converted products (prints, varnished, grooved, glued), technical assistance in mills (follow-up and control of production, converting runnability audits).

Activities

The activity of the unit comes in research projects, participation in standardisation actions of the Profession, management of an interlaboratory testing programme and tests/expertises on paper-board.
Research projects linked to improvement in performances of finished products are regularly led by the team. Thus, a study of ST paper machine profiles made possible the development of an assessment method of the fibre orientation two-sidedness and enabled to determine the kinetics of paper equilibrium settings with the surrounding atmosphere. The objective of a second subject was to obtain a reliable prediction of the cracking at the fold phenomena, to study the influence of adjustments and folding at printer and to develop substrates and coats that reduce the tendency for cracking at the fold and picking.
Currently, a project aiming at understanding and reducing the dusting phenomenon of paper and tissue products is under progress. As well, a study whose goal is to diminish print paper transvision at printing through optimisation of paper manufacturing process has just started.
The standardisation follow-up is carried out worldwide in several fields of the papermaking industry: tests on Pulps, Paper, Board, tests on tissue papers and tissue products, preservation of documents, packaging marking, and graphic communications. AFNOR will be represented in the European and worldwide Authorities.
The answers to the investigations concerning the projects of standards CEN and ISO as well as validations of translations of standards are completed.
Interlaboratory tests are proposed by CEPI-CTS (Confederation of European Paper Industry-Comparative Testing Service), in the framework of the contractual activity to which we belong.
CTP, as ISO authorised laboratory, according to ISO 4094 standard, issues IR3 brightness to calibrate spectrocolorimeters in conformity with standards.
Tests on papers, boards and converted products can be performed under accreditation (COFRAC accreditation n° 1-0552, (see available scope on www.COFRAC.fr). The tests are carried out, from time to time, or in the framework of production follow-up or supplying, with variable periodicity. They may be led also in a comparative approach before buying decision-taking. In the case of problems linked to performance of the finished product, or faced during paperboard converting, a service of consultancy & expertise is also ensured.
